Rock-Eval 6 Analytics
The characterization of hydrocarbon generating source-rocks has come back into the focus of the hydrocarbon industry, in particular with the exploration of shale gas deposits. Since the 80’s the methodology of the Rock Eval pyrolysis has been used for the characterization of hydrocarbon source rocks. Information about the quantity of the organic matter as well as their quality and thermal maturity can also be obtained. Through changes to the temperature program in the pyrolysis and the oxidation phases, technical developments (e.g. new, sensitive IR detectors) as well as improvements in the design of the analyzer (temperature is now measured directly at the sample crucible), the reliability has been significantly improved.
In addition to these improvements, new information could be obtained and additional parameters have been added. The accuracy and significance of the determination of TOC has been greatly increased by a continuously monitoring of the CO and CO2-release and is now comparable with the TOC determination of elementary analysis. With carbonate-rich rocks the new Rock Eval 6 analytic is clearly superior to the conventional LECO methodology, since it is no longer necessary to complete the de-carbonatization phase before completing the analysis. With the help of this new analysis process the reservoir geologist is now able to accomplish a high-efficient and in-depth characterization of the source rock.
